Concurso Estatal
To the Student

¡Felicitaciones!  Your amazing performance on the National Spanish Exam
has earned you the honor of being invited to participate in the Concurso
Estatal, an oral Spanish competition by invitation only that is limited to the
very best Spanish students in Minnesota.  Here's what to expect at the
contest:

When you arrive, you should look for signs to direct you to your interview
location, depending on your level.  When you get to your interview location
you will register.  The person at the registration table will give you a score
sheet for the oral interview with your name on it.  It is very important that you
do not lose this sheet as there is only one.

The person who gives you the sheet will also write a number on it.  An
interview monitor will call out these numbers as interview judges become
available.  When your number is called, take your things (you will not be
allowed back into the waiting area) and go to the interview judges that you
are assigned.

There will be two people in the room, one will ask you the questions and the
other person will score you and record your score on your score sheet.  Give
the score sheet to the person who is doing the scoring and take a seat.  The
big moment has arrived.  Take a deep breath.

The person who is interviewing you will ask you a few warm up questions.
These will not be scored.  The purpose of these questions is to give you a
chance to get comfortable understanding the accent of the person doing the
interview and get used to conversing in Spanish with this person.

Then you will be asked five questions.  Answer each one as fully as
possible.  Your objective is to impress the judge with the amount of Spanish
you know.  So provide as many details as you can, use as many different
words as you can, and try to use more complex sentence types if you can.

Then you will be given a situation card.  The situation will ask you to do a
role-play situation or to describe a situation.  It will be based on situations
you have probably practiced in class.  You will be given a minute to organize
your thoughts before you begin to speak.  Add as much detail to your
description or explanation as you can.  Explain as many different aspects of
the problem or situation as you can.  Use the full range of your vocabulary
and try to use a variety of sentence types.  Try to make your language sound
as much like a natural conversation as possible.

At the end of the interview, you will be given a finalist ribbon which your
mother can hang on your refrigerator.

Go to La Plaza Mayor to relax, have fun with your friends, practice more
Spanish, learn a few dance steps, check out the artwork and live
performances by the
Festival Quijote participants, and await the results
which will be announced at the awards ceremony.
