Summary of Oral Interviews
Level 1
Target Proficiency Level: Novice Mid (Student lists words and uses
memorized phrases)
Themes: time, weather, schedules, present activities, food, description of
people
Warm-up questions (not graded): ¿Cómo estás? ¿Cómo te llamas?
¿Dónde estudias?
Sample questions: ¿Qué clases tienes? ¿Qué te gusta hacer? ¿Cómo
es tu mejor amigo/a?
Sample situation: Describe a picture in as much detail as you can.
Level 2
Target Proficiency Level: Novice High (Student uses phrases and short
sentences in familiar contexts)
Themes: home, family, pastimes, descriptions of people, school activities,
likes and dislikes
Warm-up questions (not graded): ¿Cómo te llamas? ¿Cuántos años
tienes? ¿De dónde eres?
Sample questions: ¿Cómo es tu familia? ¿A quién admiras y por qué?
¿Cuál es tu clase favorita y por qué?
Sample situation: Ask the interviewer some questions to find out
everything you can about a recent trip he/she took.
Level 3
Target Proficiency Level: Intermediate Low (Student can speak in
sentences, ask and answer more complicated questions, and describe
situations in tihe past as well as the present)
Themes: customary routines, important events, childhood, work
Warm-up questions (not graded): ¿Cómo te llamas? ¿Cómo te sientes?
Sample questions: ¿Cómo celebraste tu último cumpleaños? ¿Qué te
gustaba hacer de pequeño/a? ¿Qué haces en un día típico de la escuela?
Sample situation: Choose a holiday and tell how you celebrated it. Also
explain how this holiday is typically celebrated in Minnesota.
Level 4
Target Proficiency Level: Intermediate Mid (Student can link sentences
together so conversations flow more comfortably; can describe in detail)
Warm-up questions (not graded): ¿Cuántos años hace que estudias
español? ¿Qué te gusta hacer?
Sample questions: ¿Por qué estudias el español? ¿Cómo sería el/la
maestro/a ideal? ¿Cuáles son las ventajas y desventajas de practicar un
deporte en el colegio?
Sample situation: Describe in detail the plot of a movie you've seen
recently.
Level 5
Target Proficiency Level: Intermediate High (Student converses naturally
and can organize speech into paragraphs. Narrates in all tenses and is
capable of stating and supporting opinions.)
Warm-up questions (not graded): ¿Cuántos años hace que estudias
español? ¿Qué te gusta hacer?
Sample question: ¿Piensas que es buena o mala idea tener un trabajo
mientras estudias?
Sample situation: Convince your parents that it would be a good idea for
you to study in a Spanish-speaking country - why it will benefit you, how you
will stay safe, and what country you would choose and why
