El Premio Ricardo A. Narváez
Overview of the Ricardo A. Narváez Award

Prior to his death in September of 1985, the Executive Committee of the
Minnesota chapter of the AATSP voted to name Dr. Ricardo A. Narváez an
honorary member of the chapter in recognition of his many contributions to the
teaching of Spanish in the United States. Then, during the 1985-1986 academic
year the Executive Committee approved the creation of the Ricardo A. Narváez
Award to be given each year to an outstanding teacher of Spanish in Minnesota.

The criteria for the award are:

  • Current member of the AATSP and a member for at least five total years
    (not necessarily consecutive)
  • A teacher of Spanish for at least 15 years
  • Evidence of excellence as a teacher of Spanish
  • Distinguished professional service (e.g. organizational work, presenting,
writing, editing) that promotes the study of world languages and cultures,
    particularly Spanish and Hispanic culture

Members of the Minnesota AATSP Executive Committee are eligible while on
the committee if they have served eight or more years on the committee, either
consecutively or cumulatively. In the case of two equal candidates, preference
will be given to the candidate who is not a current member of the executive
committee.
