Festival Quijote

Who can be a Festival Quijote Judge?
A Festival Quijote judge can be a Spanish teacher, a student teacher,
Spanish-speaking community member or any other Spanish-language
enthusiast! Just ask us if you're unsure. Teachers, judging at the Festival is
a great, easy way to check out the event and see if it's something your
school could participate in.

What are the benefits of being a Judge?

  • recertification clock hours for service to our professional organization
  • coffee and rolls for breakfast
  • lunch
  • meet your Spanish colleagues from other schools
  • appreciation... without judges, the Festival cannot exist!

What is my time commitment?
Judges attend a meeting in the morning prior to judging, and are free to
leave as soon they'd like after completing the rubrics and turning in the
results, typically by 11AM. However, judges are invited to stay for the
carnival, a free lunch, and the awards ceremony to meet and honor the
winners!

What do I do as a Festival Quijote Judge?
Before any events begin, you attend a meeting where you will receive
specific information about your category and meet your judging partner. We
try our best to have judging pairs.

If you judge a performance category such as Vocal or Instrumental Music,
Skits, Theater, or Recitation, you will begin the event by asking all
contestants to sign in and come up as they are ready. Some students may
be also competing in the oral interviews of the Concurso Estatal, so they will
need to be accommodated as necessary. They will provide you with an
entry form and any other required elements (such as a script or poem),
introduce themselves, and begin the performance.

After attending the meeting, display category judges (maps, travel posters,
craft, and visual art) find the area housing their specific category and begin
their work.

Children's Literature and Videos, which are submitted by March 14, are
sent to the judge who views and evaluates them at his/her own pace.
Videos are returned to the MN-AATSP so that they may be formatted to
scroll and Children's Literature is displayed for all to view at the Festival.

All judges score each based on the rubric found on the entry form provided
by the student and professional judgement. (The entry forms will be returned
to students, so please feel free to make helpful comments for them!) After all
are evaluated, they calculate the top three entries and return all entry forms
to the registration desk.

The MN-AATSP executive committee will select the winning T-Shirt design
and make t-shirts available for purchase at the Festival!
